Sub:Proposal for Revision of Uniform Colour Code for Pointsmen – Introduction of Sky Blue Shirt and Black Trousers.

Dear Sir,

AIRF seeks to draw the kind attention of the Railway Board towards a long-pending and justified demand of the Pointsmen cadre regarding revision of their existing uniform colour code and introduction of a more distinct, professional and safety-oriented uniform consisting of Sky Blue Shirt and Black Trousers across Indian Railways.

Pointsmen constitute one of the most vital frontline categories directly connected with train operations and railway safety. They perform critical duties relating to points operation, shunting movements, signaling assistance and safe train handling under all weather conditions, often in highly challenging and risk-prone working environments. Despite their crucial role, the existing grey-coloured uniform does not provide a distinct professional identity and is often difficult to differentiate from that of other categories of railway employees.

The proposal for adoption of Sky Blue Shirt and Black Trousers is based on the following considerations:

  1. The present uniform does not adequately reflect the unique role and responsibilities of Pointsmen. A distinct and modern uniform will provide a clear professional identity, enhance recognition of the cadre and foster a greater sense of pride, dignity and belongingness among these employees who serve as an essential link in train operations.
  2. Pointsmen are required to work on and around running lines, yards and stations during shunting and train movement operations. The proposed high-contrast combination of Sky Blue Shirt and Black Trousers will significantly improve visibility during day and night operations, enabling Loco Pilots and other operating staff to identify them more easily and thereby contributing towards enhanced operational safety and accident prevention.
  3. The nature of duties performed by Pointsmen exposes them to extreme heat, dust, rain and other adverse weather conditions. The revised uniform should therefore be manufactured from high-quality, breathable, durable and weather-resistant fabric to ensure maximum comfort, ease of movement and long service life under demanding field conditions.

It may kindly be appreciated that Pointsmen are among the first-line guardians of railway safety. Revision of their uniform colour code is not merely a matter of appearance; rather, it is an important measure aimed at strengthening their professional identity, enhancing workplace safety and according due recognition to their invaluable contribution towards safe and efficient train operations.

AIRF, therefore, strongly urges the Railway Board to accord sympathetic consideration to this genuine demand and approve the introduction of Sky Blue Shirt and Black Trousers as the official uniform colour code for Pointsmen across Indian Railways at the earliest.

An early and favourable decision in the matter will be highly appreciated.

Yours faithfully,

(Shiva Gopal Mishra)
