The Chairman,
Railway Board,
New Delhi

Dear Sir,

Sub: Advancement prospects for Pointsman Category

Pointsman Category is one of the important Safety Categories in Indian Railways, who are to perform hazardous and heavy duties, like coupling of coaches, locomotives and wagons, pad locking and piloting trains in case of signal failures, etc. etc. Obviously, their duties are prone to risk of life and there have been a number of cases when Pointsman lost their lives while performing their duties. They have to work in all weather conditions, ranging from chilling cold to scorching heat as also under heavy rain. It is, however, quite unfortunate that, promotional prospects for this vulnerable category staff are very poor and currently they are having only two grade structure. Owing to arduous nature of duties, generally, people are found to be least interested to join this post.

Keeping in view the above facts, it would be quite appropriate that, for providing them adequate advancement prospects, they should also be granted four-grade structure, as has been done in case of Trackmen Category, with other associated benefits, at an early date.
